OS X Mavericks is the tenth major release of OS X. Apple announced the new operating system at WWDC 2013 and shipped it that October. Mavericks loses the big cat moniker that had preceded each earlier version of OS X, along with a price tag. The software's a free upgrade for all eligible Macs, the first time Apple's done that with OS X since OS X 10.1 was released. There were more. So, I start it up and it takes me to Mac OS X instalation screen (The Snowlepard disk is in it) and I select a language and then agree to the terms and service. It then takes me to a screen that says 'Install Mac OSX' as a title and below it says 'Select the disk where you want to install Mac OS X'. OS X Mavericks was released on October 22, 2013, as a free update through the Mac App Store worldwide. It placed emphasis on battery life, Finder enhancements, other enhancements for power users, and continued iCloud integration, as well as bringing more of Apple's iOS apps to the OS X. OS X Mavericks (version 10.9) is the 11th major release of OS X, Apple's desktop and server operating system for Macintosh computers. OS X Yosemite was announced on June 10, 2013 at WWDC 2013, and was released in October of 2014. (please update below) The update places emphasis on battery life, Finder enhancements, other enhancements for power users, and continued iCloud integration, as well. OS X 10.9 'Mavericks' is an operating system made by Apple Inc. for its Macintosh line of computers. It is a version of OS X, and carries the release number 10.9. It was released on October 22, 2013.[1] According to Apple, 'Mavericks' contains over 200 changes and improvements since OS X Mountain Lion.[2]

Notable New Features[change | change source]

  • iBooks - allows you to buy and read books on your Mac.
  • Maps - browse and search places using Apple's Maps service.
  • iCloud Keychain - stores your passwords and credit cards in iCloud and fills them in for you when needed on any of your Apple products. 'Keychain' can also suggest passwords for you to use when creating new online accounts.
  • Multiple Displays - makes your Mac easier to use if you have more than one computer screen.
  • App Nap - stops apps that aren't being used from slowing down your computer.

  • Calendar - looks more modern and works well with Maps.
  • Safari - updated the 'Top Sites' screen and shows you links people have shared with you on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
  • Notification Center - now allows you to send messages from Notification Center without opening Messages, and also shows you notifications you may have missed on your lock screen.
  • Finder - lets you open tabs in Finder, and tag files with keywords so you can search your files more easily.
